How to work on the social sustainability of our healthcare?
The impact of the upcoming ageing population on the Netherlands shows a significant demographic shift: a future in which the Netherlands is faced with a ‘double grey’ society, with both the number of people aged 65 and over and the number of people aged 80 and over increasing. This has profound consequences for the societal structure, including the economy and public services. The demand for healthcare professionals is expected to increase to 2.3 million by 2040, representing more than a quarter (25.3%) of the working population. While ageing can lead to labour market shortages and pressure on healthcare, it also offers opportunities for innovation in technology and services specifically aimed at older people.
The upcoming transformation of the Netherlands will inevitably lead to new challenges and opportunities within the labor market and the educational landscape. In light of these changes, we introduce an innovative simulation education module and further education program that is primarily designed to optimally prepare students within healthcare education for their professional future. But also for people with professions outside of healthcare such as: Urban planners, Architects, Policy makers, HR employees, Product designers, Legal advisors or Innovation managers.
There will be a growing need for adaptive policies that anticipate these ageing effects, focusing on sustainable growth and maintaining social cohesion. We believe that by taking a proactive approach to education and training, we can not only meet the changing needs of the labour market, but also stimulate a more empathetic and efficient care sector.
